And all the men and women merely players…”

“We are such stuff
As dreams are made on…”

A biography is always written about someone
who is no longer there.
About the child we used to be.
About the roles we were given or chose for ourselves.
About Narcissus, Hamlet, Don Quixote, Icarus, Sisyphus, Judith —
about those in whose stories we still recognize ourselves.
In his play Biography: A Game, Max Frisch gives a person the opportunity to turn back and play out their life once again. But if we changed a single scene, would we change the entire story that follows?
Every evening when we lie down, we journey away from the time we lived during the day. In a dream, we can return to where we have already been, meet those who are gone, become who we never became.
And in the morning, we return.
But do we return as the same people?
Perhaps a biography is not only what happened to us. Perhaps it is also what we continuously re-enact out of all of it.
How many lives fit into a single biography?
