SAULIUS VAITIEKŪNAS
CV
SAULIUS VAITIEKŪNAS

Saulius Vaitiekūnas (1953) is a recognizable and at the same time completely unpredictable artist, whose creative biography inextricably combines, it seems, very different forms of expression – jewelry, monumental sculpture and conceptual installations. For the artist himself, these modes of expression are important as forms of communication, thanks to which it is possible to direct a person’s thought or state towards personal land, trying to provoke fundamental questions: “Who are you?”, “Where are you going?”, “What is this?”

One of the main creative materials – stone – has become more than a material, thing or object for S. Vaitiekūnas. This is where the archaism and modernity of this artist lie. Terra recognita – recognized land – is simultaneously the original substance of divine creation, daily bread, and an existential question, to which the creator returns again and again during his more than three decades of creative work. Turning even the smallest stone between his palms, S. Vaitiekūnas recognizes in it the miracle of the creation of the universe, repeated here and now, and at the same time the mystery of his own creation.

A stone with a hole polished by sea waves, sand, wind and time – a painful necessity – turned into a multi-meaning symbol for S. Vaitiekūnas, talking about happiness, man, light, life, the universe… On the other hand, clock mechanisms, plastic dolls, discs also become a metaphysical hint for the artist. saws or fishing nets – all things freed from their everyday meanings and given a new life. And yet, for this artist, a stone with a hole is the essential sign of everything. S. Vaitiekūnas is a conceptual artist. The collection of his creations contained many things – amulets carved with archetypal symbols, licks waving auspicious paths, 8-ton fieldstones exploding the Message, millstones turning the daily prayer wheel, watches striking the second millennium, an orchestra frozen in silence, a column ticking with an innumerable abundance of mechanisms, an endless ” the echoes of the forest-sea battle, the wailing walls of our home “strewn” with votives, or the odes of happy stones to our shore. What is it all about? It’s always about the same thing – about the recognized land that you can call your own and about yourself, a small lump of land that recognizes itself every time anew in this time. Undoubtedly, S. Vaitiekūnas creates in his time about his time. His works are full of hints and references to the processes taking place in our society today – the absurdity of politics, the threat of ecology, the challenges of emigration. Feeling the pulse of everyday life, the artist openly articulates his position and the feelings in the air, becoming relevant and timely. The uniqueness of this artist is that in his work he perfectly manages to combine small and large, personal body marks with monumental works that often amaze the viewer with their size and ambition. The best example of this combination is the “Terra recognita” gallery he founded – a year-round and constantly changing installation in the Old Town of Vilnius. Among the “ritual items” fragments of monumental works find their place here, becoming the body of the same land that S. Vaitiekūnas recognized, spoke to, and spoke to him.
