2020. Carrying the rain

2020 / Saulius Vaitiekūnas

Corrugated steel pipes, lights

For almost twenty years the artist has been consistently creating as what can be called “Clouds”. From the beginning of this millennium, as if one big series, he created jewelry pieces, objects and installations in various aspects related to the atmospheric phenomenon accumulations of water droplets, ice crystals in the sky. Installation “Carrying the rain” is a continuing part of this creative process.

Saulius Vaitiekūnas refers to the installation and its ‘characters’ as drawings. It is as twisting a pencil on paper or a wall. As the artist says: “I used to paint this way myself, later I saw daughters behaving similarly, and later – grandchildren …. Shapes transform into one another as they move.”

Clouds can be understood and interpreted in an ambiguous way: from informational “clouds” in which many of us save information that is important, up to the global warming issues that are relat- ed to water scarcity in some regions of the world and surplus in others.

You can also remember the poetic etymology of the name of Lithuania, the fogs (clouds) as deception metaphor … There may be many meanings, they all depend on the perceiver and the context …

An important visual component of the exhibition “Carrying the rain” is light and shadows. They, highlighting drawing line in space peculiarities, dematerializes the gravity of metal. Movement of sculptural form and ephemeral graphic lines, merging silhouettes, like the real clouds, in this installation move, change position, clang and ring like bells … light, kinetic, creating an unmatched theatre of light and shadow clouds. The theatre that water creates in the sky.
